EU will shift its focus in Bosnia at economy

A top EU official says the bloc is shifting its focus in Bosnia from constitutional changes to economic and judicial reform, issues at the root of three weeks of protests.

Protests against poverty, unemployment and corruption are continuing without local politicians showing any reaction while persisting in the inter-ethnic bickering that blocks the country’s path toward EU membership.

The EU mediated between Bosnia’s leaders for years without success on eliminating discrimination from the constitution. The last negotiations failed Tuesday morning with the EU Enlargement Commissioner, Stefan Fuele, pulling out and instead meeting representatives of the protesters.

Fuele said the EU will work to help Bosnia develop national economic reform, review the ongoing EU projects, start new programs and help strengthen the judicial system.
