Featuring the Young French Fashion Culture

Generally speaking, like children from most parts of the world, the French youth have varying fashion sense and this usually depends on their personal style and budget. Their fashions wear also differ depending on the occasion and the setting.

Jeans, t-shirts and sneakers, which are popular in the United States and in several other countries, are considered extremely casual in France. In fact, they are so ordinary that they are least preferred to be worn for parties or special occasions. However, given the ingenuity of their predecessors, the French youth are usually able to make themselves look more fashionable in regular jeans. What they do is mix and match them with colorful tops and accessories, thereby creating a modern fashion illusion.

Some French kids impress by pairing their jeans and sneakers with turtlenecks or silk blouses, fur or denim trench coats, oversized shades and chain necklaces – combining street and grunge with sophistication. Obviously, the French youth style is very inspired. So much so that it turns ordinary tshirts, glossy pumps, skinny jeans, hoodies, scarves, parkas and miniskirts into high fashion ensembles.

French school uniforms also have part in the French fashion scene. This is since children are usually required to dress up in similar charming school outfits during school days. Most school uniforms are usually composed of a skirt and blouse for girls and the counterpart of slacks and a polo shirt for boys. To break the monotony, some French children accentuate their mundane uniforms with colorful stockings, golden buttoned peacoats and cute bags. Boys, on the other hand, add a little color through scarves and vests.

In terms of special occasion dresses, the French youth definitely have much to say.  But unlike their adult contemporaries, French party dresses for young girls are a lot lighter, hipper and more fun-oriented. See, Paris has recently been invaded by the pop culture. Thus, you can expect the Parisian youth dressed in the same fashionable outfits worn by Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez. Jewelled fur coats, lace-cut leather, beaded dresses – you name it and the young French wear it. In France, you do not have to be a celebrity in order to look good.

Now, despite having gained fame because of their traditional definition of style, France has now embraced contemporary clothing tastes and pushed high fashion to the next level. It’s “in with the bold” for the French and out with the “old”. The beret, for example, which has become a standard representation of French culture, is practically considered a thing of the past by most French children. In fact, it has been downscaled to mere tourist souvenir items and is rarely worn for the sake of fashion. On a good note, other traditional “French” items, such as striped shirts in navy and white colors, remain constant in most wardrobes of French children and are worn proudly for different occasions. Though clearly exploring new avenues, the French youth still shows inclination to familiar French fashion.

French youth fashion sense is undoubtedly fascinating. But what should you expect? France is known as the fashion capital of the world. It is only natural that it continues to produce different styles of fashion and performance wear and inspire its youth to continue its legacy. Home to well-renowned fashion designers such as Christian Dior, Coco Chanel and Jean-Paul Gaulthier as well as Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Cardin and Louis Vuitton; it is not at all surprising that such place is riddled with the most fashion forward teens.
