Sinking of the SS Montebello

On December 23, 1941, the steam tanker S. S. Montebello was sunk by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine in coastal waters near San Simeon, California, as described in this statement by Captain Olof W. Eckstrom. The tanker had departed from Port San Luis Obispo loaded with crude oil for delivery to Vancouver, BC. Although the vessel was a total loss, there were no casualties.
