Tokyo Has Grown in Size and Culture

Tokyo was not always the huge metropolis that it is today. It was originally a fishing village and went by the name of Edo. However, this once small fishing village did not remain small for a long period of time. In the year 1603, Edo became a Japanese government military center when Tokugawa Ieyasu became the reigning shogun. This helped both this small village and the culture to grow. By the eighteenth century the population had grown to over one million individuals.

Today, over 8 million people live in Tokyo Japan and another 2.5 million commute to the city during the day to either go to school or to work. This makes the population in this city higher than it has ever been. Just as in America, it has turned into a cultural melting pot.

Not all of Japanese society, especially in this fair city, is made up of individuals of this country’s heritage. Today, people of Filipino, American, British, Chinese and French descent live there. Individuals of other cultures have brought a lot to the Japanese culture and have taken many things from it too.

When most of us think of a city that is king in the finance world, we would most likely think of New York City. While it is true that this city is one of the top ranking, there are two others that can be included in the same category; London and Tokyo, Japan. The later is not only a king in the high finance world, but it is home to the biggest economic system in the world. Another claim that this city can boast of is the fact that over 50 Japanese companies are on the Global 500 list.

Once a tiny fishing town, the now huge city of Tokyo has definitely grown in both size and culture over the years. Japanese society has seen many changes over the centuries; many that led to today’s large populous. When individuals from other cultures came to Japan to live, they brought with them their philosophies and ideas, some of which were adapted by the Japanese people. This Japanese city has become a huge financial and cultural hub, attracting more and more individuals who want to visit, and work and live in this fair city.
