DeKalb BOC District 1 Candidate Q&A: Tom Owens

Thomas_Owens1)  Why are you running for office?

I am outraged by the current culture of corruption deceit by the DeKalb County Government.

2)  What do you see as the one or two biggest challenges and opportunities for District 1? 

a.      To clean up the corruption in the DeKalb County Government as in the first case of Elaine Boyer.  There will be more to follow it appears.

b.       We want to finish the job we have started stop the waste of tax payers money.

3)  How are you uniquely qualified to represent the citizens of District 1?

I retired after 21 years military service in the U.S. Army.  I have been on active duty in 3 war zones.  I am a Life Time member of the Atlanta Viet Nam Veterans Business Association.  I am an active supporter of the Atlanta Airport USO have helped raise thousands of dollars for the USO. The military has trained me to handle hazardous waste and protect the environment.  I have dealt with many people of all ethnic backgrounds and creeds all over the world to include the Far East  Middle East, Europe and Indochina, as well as over a dozen states in the US.  I have commanded troops of every creed and ethnic group.

4)  Do you support the CEO form of DeKalb County Government? Explain your answer and supply an alternate to the CEO structure if you do not support it.

NO!  It is the current root of the problem as evidenced by the conduct of previous current CEO’s the investigation(s) trial(s) of same.  We need professional management of DeKalb Government with  the input of the cities and citizens!

5)  Do you support the current trend of municipalizing DeKalb County? Explain your answer and supply rationale why you would support or oppose.

YES!!  With the demographics and make up of this county it is the only way that people in District 1 will ever have a meaningful participation in state or local government
